In this digital world, learning how to efficiently use computers is an incredibly valuable skill to have \u2013 that\u2019s why more and more schools are placing focus on this within educational programs.<\/p>\n

As children, we are more absorbent to new information, so it\u2019s easier to pick up new IT tools and how best to use them. This can help to shape the future of our children, as these skills are transferable across a broad range of careers today.<\/p>\n

Why is it important for children to learn basic computer skills?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

There is a multitude of skills to be learnt when it comes to computers, and with society relying more and more upon technology nowadays, it comes as no surprise that computer science is one of the fastest-growing industries to date. Having a basic knowledge of programs such as Microsoft Word<\/a>, PowerPoint, Excel, and Publisher can all hugely boost resumes, as these are tick boxes that employers look for when recruiting new staff members.<\/p>\n

Why is it important for children to learn basic coding?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Learning coding from a young age can be incredibly beneficial within the classroom. Coding is much more than just computing; it teaches a whole plethora of skills along the way.<\/p>\n

Here are just a few advantages it can have:<\/p>\n

Problem-solving<\/strong> \u2013 this is a fundamental skill that all children should harness, as it helps to equip them for some of the difficult decisions they may need to make in adult life. Coding requires children to look at the bigger picture and then break it down into smaller chunks until they reach a solution.<\/p>\n

Teamwork<\/strong> \u2013 when children are engaging in coding projects, this requires a good dose of teamwork to crack the code! It encourages classmates to listen to one another, while
\npromoting discussion of different ideas. Through trial and error of these, children can use teamwork to find the correct answers.<\/p>\n

Communication skills<\/strong> \u2013 coding requires children to consider how information on a webpage will be displayed and therefore how it will be interpreted by others. When the project is complete, teachers and parents can ask their children to explain to them exactly how they solved the code, all aiding in children\u2019s communication skills.<\/p>\n

Creativity<\/strong> \u2013 while some mathematical and logical aspects must be applied when coding, what many people don\u2019t realise is that there is a great deal of room for creativity too. Children become innovative creators, choosing between font styles, colours, and adding pictures of their choice to create an eye-catching webpage.<\/p>\n

How can schools incorporate these skillsets within the classroom?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

There are many tools available to teachers who wish to place focus on computing, coding, and the skills involved within these subjects.<\/p>\n

Microsoft has created initiatives such as Hour of Code<\/a>, allowing children to experience coding via the use of interactive games online.<\/p>\n

For younger children, you may wish to start with building on the skills required for successful coders, this is a great way to create confidence in a child\u2019s abilities.
